Hair Growth Cycles: A Guide for Waxing

Understanding the three stages of hair growth is essential for effective waxing. These stages are:

  1. Anagen (Growth): This is the active growth phase. Approximately 90% of hair follicles are in this stage at any given time. The hair grows from the hair follicle and continues to lengthen until it reaches its full length.

  2. Catagen (Transition): This is a short transitional phase, lasting a few weeks, where the hair follicle shrinks.During this time, the hair stops growing.

  3. Telogen (Rest): This is the resting phase. The hair follicle is dormant, and the hair is held in place until it is naturally shed. About 8-9% of hair follicles are in this stage.

Why Timing Matters:

  • Hidden Growth: Even when you get waxed, some hairs may be in the anagen phase, growing beneath the skin. These hairs may be too short to be grasped by the wax.

  • Visible Growth: In the following days or weeks, these hidden hairs will emerge from the skin. The speed at which they become visible depends on their thickness and color. Dark, thick hair will become noticeable sooner than light, fine hair.

To ensure optimal waxing results, it's recommended to wait for your hair to grow to a suitable length (usually about 0.5cm or the equivalent of a match head) or the equivalent of 4 weeks growth before your appointment. This will allow the wax to effectively grasp the hair and remove it from the root.
